The walking is reached by driving out 20 to 80 minutes, parking, crossing a headland and driving back, so the island arrives as a set of day trips instead of a line of hotels.

- Who this rhythm does not suit
- Anyone who wants the west coast, the Great Northern Peninsula, or more than one corner of the island in seven days. It also suits nobody who needs a fixed daily plan, because fog can take the intended walk away with two hours notice and the substitute is whatever is low and inland.

The season is short and the fog is part of it
The window is mid-June to the third week of September. Before that, several coastal roads and most of the village kitchens are still shut and the guided routes have not been cleared. After late September the boat stops running and you are down to about eleven hours of light at the trailhead.
Fog is the part people underestimate. On this coast it can sit for four or five days in a row in late June and early July, and it does not lift by eleven the way it does further south. You still walk. You walk in 40 yards of visibility, and the headland you drove an hour to reach stays invisible the entire time you are standing on it.
The weeks we argue people out of are the last of June and the first of July, if the reason for coming is what the cliffs look like. Those weeks are quiet and cost less, which is why they get booked. Late August into the first half of September gives the clearest air and the firmest ground, and it fills first.
What is still open when you confirm
Four things get settled at confirmation rather than now. Room grade, since the harbor front rooms and the two rear rooms differ by about $30 per person per night. Which half of the week carries the two long walks, which we set against the forecast we can see 10 days out. Whether the boat day goes in at all, because some travelers would rather trade it for a fourth walk. And the date itself, which drives every other answer on this page.
