The Three Stretches When This Region Gets Difficult

The rest of the year a day or two of notice is plenty. These three stretches are the exceptions, and they are exceptions for three different reasons, which is why one rule about them does not work.

Thistle Crossing books ground transfers and runs none of them. No airline, no airport authority, no government body, no hotel group and no carrier owns this desk, pays it or stands behind it. The ride itself is worked by a local operator who holds their own permits, and their name is on the vehicle rather than ours.

01November

One: the week of Thanksgiving

The heaviest of the three by some distance, and the one people plan for least well because they plan for the wrong day.

  • The outbound rush is the Tuesday and Wednesday before. Everybody books the Wednesday and the Tuesday quietly fills first.
  • The return is the Sunday after, and it is the single busiest travel day of the year at the field. An arrival pickup that afternoon meets a curb with no room on it.
  • Notice wanted: a week for a sedan, two weeks for a van.

Add half an hour to every departure window that week. Not because the road is worse but because the terminal is, and the window on this site stops at the curb.

02Winter

Two: the fortnight around the New Year

Different shape entirely. Not a single peak but a long plateau: two weeks where every day looks like a moderately busy Friday and none of them looks like a crisis.

The problem is availability rather than traffic. Drivers take time off in that fortnight like everybody else, so the same number of requests meets fewer vehicles. A booking that would be trivial in October takes three telephone calls.

Notice wanted: five days, and more for anything early or anything large.

03Summer

Three: summer Fridays, if you are east or south of the city

The one nobody counts as a busy period because it is not about the airport at all.

Traffic heading for the water on a summer Friday afternoon sits on roads your ride needs and is going nowhere near your terminal. If you are coming from Annapolis, the Broadneck side, or anywhere that touches Route 50, this is your busy season and it lasts from June to early September.

Notice wanted: two or three days, but the real fix is the departure window rather than the booking. Add forty minutes to a Friday afternoon run from that side and stop thinking about it.

04Calm

What does not need early booking

Almost everything else. An ordinary Tuesday in February takes a telephone call the day before. So does most of March, most of the autumn before November, and every weekday in the quiet middle of the day.
